Ø Causes of Absolutism (Absolutism in Europe article)

Ø Major Absolute Rulers in Europe (What empire they ruled & whether they strengthened or weakened their empire)

Ø France: Louis XIV (How Louis Came to Power, Versailles, Life in France of nobles and peasants under Louis XIV, Louis XIV reading), Edict of Nantes, Cardinal Mazarin & Cardinal Richelieu, Strengthening and Weakening policies, “I am the State”

Ø Absolute Monarchs covered in class and packet- Strengths and Weaknesses

Enlightenment:

Ø When did the Enlightenment happen and what is it?

Ø Enlightenment Thinkers: know basic information and central ideas for Locke, Hobbes, Rousseau, Montesquieu, Astell, Wollstonecraft, Voltaire, Beccaria, Diderot.

Ø Second Treatise of Government: Know Locke’s main ideas written in 2nd Treatise of government. Know Locke’s ideas on tyranny, freedoms, legislative powers, when laws may be opposed, and the role of the people.

Ø Spread of Enlightenment Ideas: Know where they spread, how they influenced art & literature, Influences on Absolute rulers (Enlightened Despots), cultural and political changes in Europe cause by the Enlightenment
